EDI Helpers

Our EDI Helpers group held its very first session, focusing on what Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) means and how, as a school, we can promote kindness and fairness for everyone.
As the 4th of January marked National Braille Day, our discussion centred on Braille and its importance in making the world accessible for people who are blind or visually impaired. We learned that Braille is a system of raised dots that allows people to read and write through touch. Mr Gibson shared an interesting fact about how Braille is used at pedestrian crossings, and we also talked about tactile paving near roads, which helps blind people know where to stop safely.
The group noticed that our school doesn’t currently have any Braille signage and suggested we change that. Together, we wrote an email to Mrs Arkwright and Mrs Hopkins asking if Braille signs could be added at the school entrance to make everyone feel welcome.

We did some research and found a customisable sign that we are going to ask to order for the front of the school.

To finish the session, the girls created a poster explaining what Braille is and even wrote their names using the Braille alphabet. It was a fantastic start to our EDI journey, and we’re excited to keep making our school more inclusive for everyone!
